The artist was here

The artist was here

Available

Parfion was a musician, an autodidact artist, and a representative of the so-called outsider art. He was born in Leningrad, but for the most of his life he lived in Ivano-Frankivsk. Most of his artistic output is rough portraits. Eyewitnesses say that Parfion painted a lot, trying to sell his works cheaply or exchange them for alcohol. The same eyewitnesses claim that art was “fun for Parfion, a way to spend time with pleasure, to shock the public.” This art magazine collects individual works by and about Parfion – texts, references, and discussions about whom he (was). All of those were collected while working on the exhibition „The artist was here“ in August 2023.

ABOUT BOOK

The publication was created after the exhibition of works by Parfion (Oleh Parfionov) “The artist was here”. This exhibition was jointly organized by the NGO Asortymentna Kimnata and Rostyslav Shpuk with the support of the Ivano-Frankivsk Regional Ethnography and Local Lore Museum. It lasted from August 10 to 29, 2023, and this art book was created based on its results. Oleh Parfionov, better known as Parfion, is a musician and artist born in 1954 in Leningrad. He lived and worked most of his life in Ivano-Frankivsk, where he died in December 2014. His works are a record of what a person loses during his or her life. Parfion depicts what has been fenced off from the present and from memory. Now this fence bears the inscription “The artist was here”. During his life, Parfion quickly created, gave away, or exchanged his works. Most of them are rough portraits. The exhibition brings together works from different collections in Frankivsk (and beyond) to look at the collectivity of the Parfion phenomenon and give voice not only to him but also to the rest of those who created Parfion.
